Route Privacy Policy

The short version

Route does not collect anything about you. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no server that belongs to us. Everything the app records stays on your iPhone.

Who we are

Route (“the App”) is developed and published by Rinse Repeat Labs. This policy covers the Route iOS app and nothing else.

What Route stores, and where

Route keeps your vehicle details, your recorded drives, your fill-ups, and your settings on your device, using Apple’s on-device storage. None of it is transmitted to Rinse Repeat Labs, because there is nowhere to transmit it to — Route has no backend.

Deleting the App deletes that data with it. You can also erase everything from within the App, in Settings.

If you have iCloud Backup or iCloud Drive turned on, your device backup may include Route’s data. That backup is held by Apple under Apple’s terms and encryption, and is not accessible to us.

Location

Route uses your location only while a drive is recording, under iOS “While Using the App” authorization, and only to work out how fast and how far you travelled.

Where you went is never recorded. Route converts each location update into a speed and a distance and discards the coordinates immediately. They are not written to storage, not kept in memory beyond the moment of conversion, and not sent anywhere. This is enforced by how the App is built rather than by policy: the type that carries driving data through the App has no field capable of holding a latitude or longitude, so no part of Route can save or export a route trace even by mistake.

Route never uses location in the background. Recording stops when you end a drive. You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services; drive recording will stop working, and the rest of the App will not.

Raw location samples are discarded at the end of each drive. Only derived figures — segment summaries and trip totals — are kept.

The one thing that leaves your device

If — and only if — you choose to look up a VIN, Route sends that VIN to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vPIC database (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov), a free public service run by the United States Department of Transportation, to find out what vehicle it describes.

  • You are asked before this happens, and shown the exact request.
  • Nothing accompanies the VIN — no location, no drives, no identifier, nothing about you.
  • Route does not keep the VIN. What is saved is the vehicle it resolved to, not the number.
  • Declining changes nothing else: you can pick your vehicle from a built-in list that needs no connection.

Your use of that public service is subject to NHTSA’s own terms and privacy practices, which we do not control.

Everything else in Route works entirely offline.

What Route does not do

  • No account, no sign-up, no email address collected
  • No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting of our own
  • No advertising, and no advertising identifier
  • No third-party SDKs
  • No selling or sharing of personal data, because there is no personal data to sell or share
  • No tracking across apps or websites, as defined by Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework

Because Route collects no personal information, there is nothing for us to disclose, sell, or share under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), and no request to us is required for you to access or delete your data — it is all on your device, visible in the App, and removable from Settings or by deleting the App.

Children

Route is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone, including children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Apple

If you install Route from the App Store, or send feedback through TestFlight, Apple may collect information under its own privacy policy. That is between you and Apple; we receive only the aggregate figures Apple chooses to show us, which identify nobody.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will appear at this URL with a new date. Since Route collects nothing, any change is likely to be a clarification rather than a new practice.
